Character Series: Legend of Zelda (specifically Majora’s Mask)
Character Age: Unknown; very, very old
Character Gender: Female
Alternate Universe
Canon Point: Post-game, non-Deity mask history
Background Link: It really doesn’t have much history…
AU Background: When the Goddesses formed Hyrule, they inadvertently formed another world: that of Termina, like a reflection on the water. The remnants of Nayru’s power came together, creating the goddess Majora. Din’s remnants of power formed the god that came to be known as the Fierce Deity, and together, they traveled to this new world and welcomed its gods happily. Majora became a goddess of mischief, and the Fierce Deity a god of war. They watched over the land together, watching the creatures grow and change. But nothing remained happy, of course, because the two of them were trying to compensate for the trinity that lacked. This led to Majora and the Fierce Deity to become lovers.
However, together they were far more dangerous than separate. They burned the world around them, Majora’s pranking becoming dangerous and the Fierce Deity only seeming to egg her on. He realized that the world they had come to was only burning, and so he ran. And Majora, long-since shunned by the other gods, gave chase. And she ran and ran until she could not run anymore, and settled in a desolate landscape. There, she granted wishes with cruel twists—killing people with their own wishes. Until, one day, her Fierce Deity came to her. And so he played music for her and she danced until her body gave out. And so he bound her to her own mask, weakened and continuing to try and find ways to chase her Fierce Deity. In the end, he bound himself to a mask, as well, bearing his visage.
After she beckoned Skull Kid to her, she took him over and retrieved her beloved’s Mask. However, she had been driven insane by her solitude, and so still sought him. She convinced the four fallen gods—Odolwa, Goht, Gyorg and Twinmold—to aid her in remaking the worlds and summoned a moon to the sky to crash down in an attempt to erase any other hiding places that the Fierce Deity could steal away to. She would consume all. And so canon happened, with her orchestrating all she could. In this ending, though, she did not give the Fierce Deity mask to Link, and so still has it in her possession.
Personality: Majora is a mischievous woman, teasing and pranking and perhaps going a bit too far at times. She is mischief incarnate, and thus playful and into getting into a good spot of trouble. It is indeed this very streak that left her in the state of the mask, steadily going insane.
She cares little for others besides herself and the Fierce Deity, clinging to his mask selfishly. This is the result of being shunned and left alone by the other gods, only ever working with them for ends that benefitted both sides. This is also why her isolation was so hard on her—she had always been alone, and it eventually drove her mad.
She is viewed with fear by humans—or at least was, when people were aware of her—because of her powerful magic and tendency to play tricks. Therefore, she was only invoked rarely, and usually for dark rituals, and she reveled in it. She enjoys playing with lives, revealing a sadistic streak.
Also, while she has very few lines in canon, what she does have shows both remarkable awareness of everything despite being trapped in a mask and a strange childishness, revealing her fractured mental state. On one hand, she boldly declares she will consume all. On the other, her Moon Child reveals a like for games—though she doesn’t like to play what’s already been played.
Another point for Majora’s fractured state of mind and seeming insanity is her views of herself in the game. If one is to retrieve the Fierce Deity mask, she states that, “I’m the good guy and you’re the bad guy. And when you’re the bad guy, you just run,” referencing her chasing of the Fierce Deity. She even sees the fights with Link as one big game, laughing and dancing all throughout them. Only when she is defeated does she finally take things seriously.
Majora is a very lonely person, however, but she has learned to push things away in her isolation, laughing to hide her own misery. She cannot tolerate what she views as weakness—in this case, showing how vulnerable she is—and so she hides it, which leaves a growing bitterness in her. She is highly envious of those with many friends, such as Link, and thus she tries to make those with friends and close relationships miserable. However, on the other hand, she despises when people take their bonds for granted because it’s something they should be happy for. This is the reason she turned Kafei into a child—he was boasting over his coming marriage to Anju, thus treating his fiancée as an object in Majora’s eyes.
She is a very haughty and proud woman, treating people’s lives as toys. She is, after all, a powerful goddess. Why shouldn’t she? There are more mortals where they came from. It is because of this pride Majora does not react well to rejection of any sort, or any sorts of insults. Which leads into the next point.
She has a very short temper, although it’s not exactly going to show. She’s very childish when angry, throwing temper tantrums or showing her cruel streak much more easily. Her bitterness also becomes apparent, with her sadistic streak displayed in full by her tendency to take her anger out on others.
On another note, one can tell when she is in a good mood because she will dance—something she quite enjoys and does through all three boss fights.
Also, Majora is very manipulative, as evidenced by her luring and possessing
TLDR; Majora is an emotional mess.
Abilities: Majora has quite a few, being a goddess.
Immortality: she is technically undying in canon, merely being exorcised from the mask with her physical form reborn. Of course, this will be nixed in Animus—leading to a very unhappy goddess. It should be noted, however, she always had the ability to be injured—she just had a much stronger body.
Shapeshifting: She can take many forms, though she is much more comfortable in her own form.
Light Attacks: Mainly manifesting in the forms of balls of light and a laser.
Flight: Or rather, hovering. She can hover. Pretty much what it says
Wish Granting: Another nixed ability, as she lacks the scales she used for this, but she had the ability to grant wishes that usually turned on the owner—Be careful what you wish for, indeed.
Empathy: She seems to have some degree of empathy, allowing her to hone in on the emotions that benefit her best. This will have a permissions post.
As well, Majora is a powerful mage and causes much of the strife in Termina. She turned Kafei into a child, is said to have been behind the Ikana Stone Tower, and turned Link into a Deku. Thus she seems to be able to alter other objects on top of her own shape. This will be toned down and a permissions post put up.
Also, it can be argued she pretty much has all of the powers of the bosses of the game, though obviously she won’t be this strong having only just been released from the mask. …So it pretty much comes down to: Majora has light abilities, flight abilities, and can manipulate people and objects physically and mentally. I will keep them incredibly weak to fit with only having just gotten out of the mask.
Sample Entry: [Perhaps it’s not smart, what she’s doing. Perhaps she shouldn’t be swimming in the open water, among the strange fish including those that would probably devour her if she made the wrong move, but here she is, dancing through the water, enjoying the freedom she finds here. Because, after all, freedom is something she loves. And here, no one will bother her as she swims, giggling about this, that and nothing.]
Swim, swim, swim your worries away… Let the sun bring the day…
[She giggles and twists in the water, ignoring all else, twirling and swirling and dancing through schools of fish before finally rolling out into the open air. There she lands, taking a deep bow for an audience that isn’t really there.]
